Ginkgo biloba is a remarkable survivor unlike any other herb and we may benefit from its hidden healing properties. Modern scientific tests show that ginkgo biloba has a powerful resistance to insect damage, bacterial infection or virus, as well as the looming pollution which fills our skies daily. Since ginkgo biloba can fight against numerous types of attacks (viral or chemical), makes it the perfect tree for smog laden city streets!
Ginkgo biloba may be helpful in the following conditions:
Ginkgo Biloba - Don't Forget This Herb!
1. Free-Radical Damage: Environmental factors such as chemical pollution, cigarette
smoke, herbicides, and radiation can also spawn free radicals. According to Wikipedia
there is a theory that implies antioxidants (e.g. Vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E)
may prevent free radicals from oxidizing sensitive biological molecules, or reduce the
formation of free radicals (may slow the aging process and prevent disease).
2. May Improve Circulation: Does ginkgo biloba improve blood flow for the elderly?
The University of Maryland Medical Center has stated that ginkgo is widely touted as
a "brain herb." Researchers recently reviewed all of the high-quality published studies
on ginkgo and mild memory impairment (in other words, people without Alzheimer's
or other form of dementia), and concluded that ginkgo was significantly more effective
than a placebo in enhancing memory and cognitive function. So, it may assist with
mental clarity, memory enhancement, and concentration.

7. Please Read Labels Carefully: There have been reported cases of herbal products
being sold that did not contain active ingredients (the herbs active constituents) needed
to be of any therapeutic value. Buying a standardized product when purchasing
tablets, tinctures, or capsules may reduce the possibility of this occurrence. Also,
look for products that are clearly labeled with the ingredients contained and amounts.
CAUTION: According to the Mayo Clinic there have been multiple case reports of bleeding, cautious use by patients on anti-coagulant therapy, with known coagulopathy, or prior to some dental or surgical procedures.
Coagulopathy: Is a medical term for a defect in the body's mechanism for blood clotting.
I have personally used this herb in tincture form and it is extremely potent. Does it produce increased circulation and improve memory? My own opinion and experience is that it does, but that is only my opinion. Being that we all have a different physiological make-up, what works for one may not work for another. I would be remiss, to not state the importance of obtaining a well-manufactured product, so make sure you thoroughly research the company you buy from.
We will have to see what the future holds for this herb that may help the elderly. I can always use a good jump start for my memory!
6. Ginkgo Biloba Capsules: Forth Generation Herbalist and teacher Christopher Hobbs,
L.Ac., A.H.G., says to take two capsules or tablets containing a standardized extract
in the morning around breakfast time and one in the evening with dinner. Nutraceutical
Sciences Institute offers a ginkgo biloba extract (Standardized to 24% ginkgo
flavonglycosides and 6% terpene lactones) in 120 mg/120 Capsules.
4. General Stress Support: May offer protection against environmental toxins (pesticides
and herbicides) and those crazy days at work where you love your boss and co-
workers.
5. Waiting on Science: Many of ginkgo biloba's seemingly magical memory enhancing
properties are still under scientific investigation.
3. Eye Protection: Ginkgo biloba may protect against retina damage and vision loss.
Also, The University of Maryland's website says that the flavonoids found in ginkgo
may help halt or lessen some retinal problems (that is, problems to the back part of
the eye).
