Echinacea: Super Immune System Booster!
Echinacea comes close to being the most
popular herb ever! Echinacea is said to be
the top-selling herbal product in the USA
and Europe. When I first started studying
herbs over 10 years ago, this was one of the first herbs I learned about. I read Christopher Hobbs book called, "Echinacea: The Immune Herb". Christopher Hobbs L.Ac., A.H.G. is a 4th generation clinical herbalist, botanist, author, and teacher. I would encourage anyone to buy all of his herbal books. After reading his book over 10 years ago, I rushed to the nearest health food store and bought some echinacea. The whole time I kept thinking this could be the herb to help support my immune system.
Finley Ellingwood, M.D., a Chicago physician, some years ago (1915) wrote about this miraculous herb. He reported that echinacea dramatically increases the production of white killer T-cells in the body to help eliminate infectious diseases of all kinds. Excerpt from Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs. Can echinacea fight against
superinfections like the AIDS virus? I am still waiting for the day there is more scientific evidence to back up such claims. I believe that echinacea, astragalus, shiitake, reishi,
goldenseal (use cautiously) and cayenne pepper may be able to effectively fight these superinfections, but only time will tell. Buy echinacea with astragalus and reishi!

"Synthetic cold remedies from the druggist's shelf do not look quite as good as they did a
few years ago. The warning labels barely fit into the space available on the product box."

My Personal Test of This Remarkable Herb
I was so excited to make a tea of this herb and I was sure it would help support my immune system. I use to be tired all the time, because my allergies were making my immune system weak. My doctors knew about this and they could only offer getting allergy shots. I had to avoid foods that would create an allergic reaction. Sadly, they found I was allergic to a variety of foods! My symptoms were similar to CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).
Here is some very interesting information about allergies: Some, although not all, studies have reported that a majority of CFS patients have allergies to foods, pollen, metals (such
as nickel or mercury), or other substances. One theory is that allergens, like viral infections, may trigger a cascade of immune abnormalities leading to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Echinacea root has been traditionally applied as an herbal remedy by the North American Plains Indians, who used its roots to make a vital poultice for a number of wounds resulting from insects, snakes, treating sore gums and colds. Echinacea may help support the immune system because it is thought to increase the production of white blood cells and have a positive effect on the lymph glands. This is the best echinacea product and I could feel it working!
While growing echinacea (echinacea angustifolia) I did some more herbal research. One fellow named John Heinerman (medical anthropologist) had shared some extraordinary information from a book called, "American Indian Medicine". If you get a chance buy this book! It is written by Virgil J. Vogel and its a precious book full of insightful information.
According to Virgil J. Vogel the Winnebago medicine men would sometimes chew up the
raw echinacea herb in order to produce a numbing effect in their mouths. This was done so they could insert hot burning pieces of coal without sustaining a serious injury and so that tribal members would fear them! NATURE'S WAY echinacea with goldenseal!
Using Echinacea was a Life-Changing Experience
I had to test this herb by chewing on the root, to see if there was any truth to Mr.
Heinerman's book. After I had fully grown some echinacea plants, I took one of the plants
into the house and cleaned the root off with water. Next, I took a bite of the root (chewed on it), to my astonishment my mouth felt a tingling sensation and then a numbness! In all the health food stores I had visited, I never had met anyone who did this. Some people may think I had lost my mind for chewing on an echinacea root, so I kept this vital information to myself. My health improved because of this marvelous herb and I still use it periodically today! Not everyone has a good reaction to echinacea for allergies like I did. Always use caution when using any herb. Click here to see what WebMD had to say about echinacea.
From this life-changing experience, I learned the echinacea I had purchased from the health food store was worthless junk! I am not encouraging anyone to chew on a fresh root like I did, but it worked! Remember to seek the consultation of your physician or other qualified health care provider before using any herbal remedies.
I am not a big fan of using capsules with this herb or making a tea from the dried root, unless you find a reputable herb company. I now knew how to taste for the effectiveness of this herb and vowed to not buy herbal junk again. The best way I found to use echinacea is in tincture form, but it must come from a reputable company! One company I recently tested for potency was Nutraceutical Sciences Institute! I had researched this company and it was taste testing time! Also, I wanted to see if I noticed a difference in my energy level. I tried their tincture of echinacea and it was very effective! I noticed the same tingling sensation as when I used the fresh root (echinacea angustifolia)! This product is superb!
Echinacea is famous for being the well-known virus, cold and flu fighter! Master Herbalist
David Hoffmann, in his book "Medical Herbalism", states that echinacea is effective against
bacterial and viral attacks. Also, Mr. Hoffmann reports that purified polysaccharides from echinacea strongly activate the body's macrophage-mediated defense system.
Macrophages may initiate the destruction of pathogens and cancer cells. According to Mr. Hoffmann polysaccharides possess the best immune-stimulating properties and are also antiviral. I highly recommend purchasing David Hoffmann's book called "Medical Herbalism", because it is an excellent holistic herbal reference, you will use repeatedly!
Yours in good health,
DeWayne H. Strickland
Most allergic people, in any case, do not have CFS. Some research indicates that people
with both allergies and emotional disorders, such as anxiety or depression, may be more vulnerable to the effects of the inflammatory response. This is a harmful overreaction of the immune system that can cause fatigue, joint aches, fever, as well as hormone and brain chemical disturbances. Excerpt from the University of Maryland Medical Center.
I knew I needed a powerful herb and a healthy diet to get my immune system on track. I made the echinacea tea from the health food store and tried it for two weeks. I did not
notice any improvement and was really upset! I knew I had to start growing echinacea
myself and that was the smartest herbal decision I had ever made!
